Plymouth . How to Change a Fuel Pump on a 1994 Cadillac DeVilleThe fuel pump on a 1994 Cadillac DeVille is mounted in the gas tank. This pump is responsible for getting gasoline from the tank to the engine. Should the pump fail or start to fail, then the engine will first have trouble running before failing completely in turn. Replacing the fuel pump takes at least an hour, but does not require any special tools or equipment. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Wheel chocks Jack Jack stands 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set Brass hammer Brass drift Flathead screwdriver Replacement fuel pump Step by Step : 1 Park the DeVille on a level surface and put the wheel chocks around the front wheels. Lift the rear of the Cadillac with the jack and put jack stands under the rear axle. 2 Place the jack under the gas tank. Unbolt the gas tank straps from the chassis with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Lower the jack down until you can access the top of the tank. Crawl under the Cadillac and locate the gas tank, which is near the rear axle. Remove the hose clamps holding the fuel lines to the tank and the fuel filler neck to the tank using the flathead screwdriver. Unplug the wiring to the fuel pump with your hands. Then lower the tank the rest of the way and pull the tank out from under the Cadillac. 3 Turn the locking ring on the top of the fuel tank sending unit and fuel pump assembly using the brass drift and brass hammer. Lift the sending unit/fuel pump assembly straight up out of the tank. Locate the fuel pump, which is bottom of the tank. Pull the pump straight up out of the assembly and move it to the side. 4 Pull off the strainer from the fuel pump with your hands and install it on the replacement fuel pump. Install the replacement fuel pump onto the assembly with your hands. Install the replacement fuel pump into the tank and use the brass drift and brass hammer to install the locking ring and secure the assembly into the tank. 5 Lift the tank up into the chassis and reconnect the fuel lines and electrical connections to the tank using the flathead screwdriver. Bolt the tank mounting straps onto the chassis with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Lower the Cadillac off of the jack stands using the jack. Tips & Warnings Never smoke or have an open flame nearby while you're working on the fuel system of a vehicle. If you do, you risk causing a fire and damaging yourself and the vehicle.

Some senders use a mechanical device that floats in the fuel, either in a tube or attached to an arm, and other types read the electrical resistance of the remaining fuel to send the level to the gauge. Most boats have a convenient access panel to get to the sending unit without moving the fuel tank; otherwise you will need to disconnect the tank and move it to a more accessible work area. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Sending unit Insulated copper wire Wire strippers Screwdriver Gasket Soldering iron Silver core solder Spray-on electrical insulation Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable, and open the access panel above the sending unit. It is usually held in place with a pair of screws or small bolts. Remove the old sending unit by disconnecting the wires and removing the five screws that hold it in place. Scrape off any excess rubber stuck to the outside of the tank. 2 Align a new gasket over the five hole pattern of the tank, and slide the new sending unit in place. Screw it in place with the five screws left over from the old sending unit. 3 Cut two lengths of insulated copper wire, and strip the insulation about a centimeter from each end. One wire should be long enough to reach the fuel gauge, and the other should be long enough to reach the nearest chassis ground. Twist the exposed strands together to make a good connection. 4 Bend the ends of the wires in a hook shape, and loop them under the connecting screws on top of the sending unit. Run the wire that is attached to the post labeled "ignition" to the ignition switch, and use silver core solder to solder the wire to the switch. Once it has cooled, insulate the connection with spray-on electrical insulation. 5 Connect the other wire to the nearest chassis ground connection. This connection will likely have the same connection type as the connection to the sending unit, held in place with a tightening screw. Securely fasten the wire to the ground connection, replace the access panel, and reconnect the negative battery cable. Tips & Warnings Never smoke when working near a fuel system. Always disconnect the battery when working near a fuel system to prevent accidental spark.
